Room family

Garage floor plan templates

A garage is dimensioned by the vehicle plus the door you need to open beside it, and one-car garages are not disappearing — they were nine percent of new single-family completions in 2024, the highest share in three decades. The other constraints are the separation between the garage and the dwelling, the slab, and where the door header lands. The templates here cover a one-car, a two-car, a tandem, and a two-car with a workshop bench along one wall. Vehicle stalls are drawn at real size with the door-opening clearance beside them.

The wall and door separating a garage from the dwelling are drawn to the fire-separation requirements cited on each sheet.

Codes cited on the sheet

  • verified IRC 2021 M1307.3 — Appliances having an ignition source shall be elevated such that the source of ignition is not less than 18 inches above the floor in garages. Exception: appliances listed as flammable-vapor-ignition resistant.
  • verified NEC (NFPA 70) 110.26(A)(1)(2)(3) — Working space about electrical equipment: 3 ft of depth for 0 to 150 V Condition 1 per Table 110.26(A)(1), a width of 30 in or the width of the equipment whichever is greater, and 6.5 ft of headroom. A car parked in that space is a violation that happens twice a day.
  • unverified IRC 2021 M1307.3.1 protection from vehicle impact (unverified) — Appliances in a garage in the path of a vehicle shall be protected from impact by barriers.
  • unverified IRC 2021 R302.5.1 and R302.6 garage separation (unverified) — The garage shall be separated from the dwelling by the required fire-resistant construction, and the door between them shall be solid wood, solid or honeycomb core steel, or 20-minute fire-rated, self-closing and self-latching, and shall not open into a sleeping room.
  • unverified typical practice — A 10 by 20 ft stall plus about 24 in beside it to open a car door and step out. Neither number is code; a garage is not a habitable room and carries no minimum area.

"Verified" means the citation was checked against the source text we hold. "Unverified" means it has not been, and should be read as a pointer to look the section up rather than as a quotation of it.
